The Asset Administration Shell (AAS) is set to become the standard for machine interfaces in the field of Industrie 4.0. It will be used as a common interface between all types of industrial machines, including robots, production lines, conveyors, etc., and their respective components or parts. Designing and creating digital twins can also be enhanced by using Asset Administration Shells.
To establish this standard, a large group of well-known companies has founded an association, the IDTA - Industrial Digital Twin Association. The definition of this interface has been driven and developed in recent years by projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
It's often difficult to create an asset administration shell, as it can consist of several sub-models representing different aspects of an asset. To create them and fill them with content, you need to hire experts who have been working on the topic for a long time. Of course, this is not desirable for a standard interface.
As a result, Meta-Level Software AG is developing an AAS generation tool, which allows users to create their own asset administration shell. It helps them by providing various support functions so that they don't need to be experts any longer. In addition to the generator, an associated marketplace to exchange administration shells will be available, too. Both of these projects are currently under development and are expected to be released soon.
