Migrating to state-of-the-art IT technology at AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke

Dillinger Hütte, established in 1685, is today Europe’s leading manufacturer of heavy plates. Dillinger plates are used in numerous projects worldwide – in the likes of gigantic steel bridges, skyscrapers, offshore plants or pipelines. Innovative and constantly further developed heavy plates from Dillinger Hütte allow engineers around the world to push the limits of what is technically feasible time and again with their projects.

Production in the steelworks is controlled using software systems that are constantly evolving due to ever-changing tasks. The existing systems are also currently being converted to the latest IT technology. One particular challenge is integrating and connecting new plants or components in parallel with overhauling existing systems. In terms of software, the Java Enterprise Edition’s proven technology is used.

Task: migrating to state-of-the-art IT technology Meta-Level Software AG has already been working together with Dillinger Hütte employees on various projects for several years now and brings its extensive expertise to the table. The system’s complexity and the associated software development is particularly due to the large number of plant components and the associated diverse data formats and forms of communication. What’s more, even the temporary failure of individual software modules – whether in the course of planned software updates or genuine malfunctions – must have as minimal an impact as possible on other subsystems. Additionally, the communication paths between the subsystems also have to be designed so that they are loss-free and robust.
